PETER BOYER Silver Fanfare
Wm. GRANT STILL Symphony No. 1
BERNSTEIN Overture: Wonderful Town
GERSHWIN Piano Concerto in F
Peter Boyer's exuberant Silver Fanfare with its regal pronouncement, sets a glittery tone for this very special opening night as Steven Karidoyanes begins his 25th year as conductor of the Phil! Add some blue, or rather blues, with William Grant Still's jazzy, popular Symphony No. 1, the first symphony composed by an African American to be performed by a major orchestra. Hues of emotions reflect across its four movements: longing for love, sorrowing in life, celebrating freedom, and glorifying righteousness. Our blue(sy) palette overflows with Leonard Bernstein's boisterous Overture to the Broadway musical, Wonderful Town and George Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F. Pianist Michael Chertock joins the Phil for this lively piece that Gershwin describes as having the Charleston rhythm, American blues, and energetic ragtime! See official press release
