Each year, as part of the Phil’s commitment to inspire future generations of music lovers, we award a scholarship to a high school junior who is pursuing a career in music. This year’s recipient, Sydney Alfano, plays trumpet with the Pembroke High School Honors Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Marching Band, and Jazz Band. She has studied with Dan Laslow since 2011, and was invited to play alongside professional musicians in the Metropolitan Wind Symphony concert. Sydney has participated in South Shore Conservatory’s Summer Music Festival and has been accepted to the concert band and orchestra at Junior and Senior SEMSBA every year since 2014. Currently, the young trumpeter is part of the Massachusetts Youth Wind Ensemble Concert Band at New England Conservatory. She also started a group called Bhorus for band members who want to sing in a chorus. The scholarship will support her trumpet and piano lessons and participation fees for the South Shore Conservatory’s Summer Music Festival.
